The Halftime String Band

Saturday, June 14th:
The Halftime String Band

For nearly five years the Halftime boys have joyfully struggled with their collective musical identity crises, embracing and eschewing tradition, carefully and recklessly blending styles, and blindly seeking that perfectly encapsulating self-aggrandizing band bio.

Tanglewood

As a four piece string band offering new and exciting arrangements of old favorites, while staying true to those musicians who have come before them, Tanglewood has drawn on many musical influences to help define and develop their sound in the three years they have been playing together. Hickory Wind circa 1978

XXX

Saturday, August 30th:
Hickory Wind
In 1973, Sam Morgan, Mark Walbridge and Bob Shank formed a band of contrarian musicians in Morgantown, WV. Calling themselves Hickory Wind, they took their fiddles, banjos, mandolins, guitars, and dulcimers to the big city to seek their fortune. No fortune was found but the boys toured the USA, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. They recorded on the fabled Flying Fish label and performed with many of their heroes – from Earl Scruggs to John Hartford & John Prine to Jackson Brown and Steely Dan; from the Chieftains to Judy Collins and Bonny Raitt.

"High Fidelity" magazine reviewed Hickory Wind's 1978 album Crossing Devil's Bridge saying:  "exhilarating ensemble sound . . . infusing Appalachian modes with modern firepower . . . folk/rock at it's most ambitious may not be dead after all." But alas, Hickory Wind had left the road. Three of the founding members of the band have kept in touch, playing together when possible, and have decided to do a few select performances during 2008. Old-time, bluegrass, Celtic, rock-and-roll, unique originals -  these guys are still writing, still playing, still excited about music. They are looking forward to a terrific summer evening at the park.
